You Are the God Who Sees Me

by Ashley on July 12, 2010

We have friends who are moving out of town. They had couches, end tables, a coffee table and t.v. armoire they wanted to give us. They said they had prayed and asked the Lord who to give their furniture to and He said our family. I felt so loved by God!

As we stood and looked at this contemporary armoire, I turned to my husband and said, “Don’t you remember how I’ve wanted an armour since we got married (almost 10 years).” He looked at me and said he didn’t remember. But that didn’t bother me a bit because God remembered the desires of my heart. God hadn’t forgotten.

I’ve carried this encounter of his intimate provision for our family with me over the last few weeks. It reminds me of a few other women in the Bible that must have felt as I have.

God Knows and Cares for Us Intimately

Hagar, rejected by Sarai, takes her son Ishmael and heads out of town. She doesn’t know where she is going. She isn’t aware of the destiny on Ismael’s life. After an life-giving encounter with the angel of the Lord she calls Him, “You are the God who sees me.” (Genesis 16:13).

Another woman, isolated by her sinful lifestyle, finds herself talking with Jesus at a well. After an unexpected, intimateconversation with a man, a Jew and maybe even another person, she runs back to her town with confidence and says, “Come and meet a man who told me everything I ever did! Could this be the Messiah?” (John 4:29). He knew her intimately.

I want to encourage you today fellow mothers…

that Jesus is the God who sees you! Maybe you’ve been waiting a long time for certain answered prayers- another baby, a restored relationship with your husband, financial provision. I don’t always understand God’s timing.

It is funny that I “waited” 10 years for the simple desire for a piece of furniture to be fulfilled. However, it was worth waiting for because it came from His hand. It will sit in my living room as a “stone of remembrance” that He knows me, loves me, and delights to give me the desires of my heart.

He loves you. He hears your cries. He’s got a plan. He wants to intercept your world in ways that will cause you to know Him better. To give you living-proof of His presence, His nearness and His love.

Resist the Temptation to Take Matters Into Our Own Hands

It may be tempting in the waiting to take matters into our own hands. I remember living in Corsica and praying for a dresser for my firstborn son’s room. It did not come. I kept praying. Still no sign of His promised provision for me.

Then, I spotted an advertisement for a dresser for 50 euros (a good deal). I couldn’t wait any longer. We went down to the store to buy it. But after I left, I felt like Rachel who “stole her father’s household gods and took them with her” into the land of Abraham (Genesis 31:19). She was headed into the unknown and thought she’d better cover her basis in case Jacob’s God wouldn’t come through.

So, under conviction of my lack of faith, I returned the dresser and waited. Sure enough, a neighbor offered us a dresser just as I had felt God had promised. But I had to keep standing on this promise.

Of course, I’m not saying it is wrong to go to the store and buy furniture. This scenario was a time when I felt God had spoken to me and was asking me to wait on Him. I grew impatient and took matters into my own hands and I might have missed an encounter with a loving God who wanted to provide His goodness and presence in my world.

The Cost of Usurping God

Like Rebekah, who manipulated Issac into giving Jacob the firstborn’s blessing, we can think we need to help God along. But God had already told Rebekah that “the descendants of your older son will serve the descendants of your younger son” while the twins were in her womb (Genesis 25:23).

Afraid God would not hold to His word, she brought deception, hatred and division into her family line that affected it for decades. She didn’t wait to see how God was going to fulfill what had been spoken to her. Of course, God brought reconciliation to this family in the end. But what a lot of wasted years because one mother relied on her own powers of manipulation and didn’t trust God’s word to her.

Let us not let any of His promises (personal or corporately given in His word) fall to the ground. Let us cling to them. Let us wait expectantly for their fulfillment. He is working. He has a plan. He sees us. He knows all about us. He is here!
