GoGreen Diapers GIVEAWAY: A Baby-Inspired, Mom-Run Business

by admin on March 18, 2011

When Leah, from GoGreen Pocket Diapers, wrote me about doing a giveaway I was ecstatic! Not only would this be Tips4Mom.com’s first giveaway but I’ve been eager to try out all-in-one diapers on my kids. I tried one on both my baby and my 2-year olds! I loved it!
Check out all my cloth diapering tips from washing to wipes right here!
I wanted to give you a chance to hear the heart behind the business!
  • Ashley: What inspired you to start your business?
Leah @ GoGreen Diapers: We moved to Boulder CO from Dallas last spring, and shortly thereafter I had my 3rd child. The disposable diaper situation was crazy since the older two were still in diapers too. It was expensive and complicated buying 3 sizes of diapers and wipes. We produced so much trash, we couldn’t fit it in our trash can. We were spending around $200/mo on diapers. So the answer was obvious, move to cloth. But the only cloth I had ever tried were the prefolds. And they did not work well at all.
I bought 12 Happy Heinys (cough! $$$) and they were awesome! I loved the bright colors and prints and they made the whole cloth diaper thing fun! But with 3 kids in diapers, I needed way more than 12 and so I began looking for cheaper options. While on this quest, I was fortunate enough to meet a manufacturer who was able to provide me with an amazing product at a great price and who was also eager to work with me to develop new products.
I realized very quickly this relationship had the potential to help a lot of families, and since there is no “middle-man” (it’s just us and our manufacturer), we can provide really affordable diapers to everyone through our website.
Leah @ GoGreen Diapers: I have a very clear vision of our mission: to reduce the cost of cloth diapers enough to where more people can afford to use them. Even if one is not an environmentalist, it makes tremendous financial sense for families to switch to cloth because of the savings.
The short-term benefit is that families will save money, and the long-term benefit is that the amount of waste reaching landfills will be greatly reduced. It’s hard for families that are struggling to make ends meet put being “green” as the number one priority, but if the driving force behind becoming more green is first and foremost saving money, I think more people will do it.
  • Ashley: What helps you keep your family the number one priority while running a successful business?
Leah @ GoGreen Diapers: The whole business is because of my family and for my family. Without my sweet kids, I would have no need for diapers (and no business) nor any insight into theThe Family Behing GoGreen Pocket Diapers market or what moms like me need in a diaper. My kids are our product testers! We have a child in each size, so it’s really helpful for testing what features work.
This business has been the one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I finally get to connect with other moms with young families and discus the trials and tribulations of running households and raising young children. My husband and I are scientists by training, and often scientists don’t have lots of kids or have kids at a young age, so I felt very isolated. Now, I have tons of other mom friends from all walks of life, who also have young children and are in a similar place in life. It has been such an enriching and rewarding experience!
Family is the core of this business and this market, and is the driving force behind it. Without my family, this business would not exist. However, it HAS been challenging keeping up with the increased work load. I’ll admit, my house is a lot less clean than it was before I started GoGreen.  I did lock myself in the bathroom once so I could make a quick post on facebook lol! But, because time has become quite a commodity, I have learned to truly cherish the time that I am able to devote to my children and I really try not take even one second for granted. Some of the best times we have are when we are doing every-day things!
Thank you Leah for sharing about your vision, your business and your family with us.
